Best place in Houston near the medical center to live?

My wife and I are relocating to Houston to start her residency. We are looking for safe, affordable place to live with a short commute as she will be working very long hours. So far the places we have found online that have fit budget and commute have been in Bellaire, Medical center, and a couple of miles east of the Astrodome. Are these safe places to live. Are there areas near the medical center that you would avoid? Any places you would recommend? Thanks for any help in advance.Best place in Houston near the medical center to live?
Near the Rice Village area is a possibility. Also: Museum district (right next the the TMC), Bellaire, West University Place, etc. A few blocks from the Museum district, it gets scary, but you can tell (even during the day). River Oaks might not be too far. Though the houses there are expensive, you might also find affordable apts.
I don't know what places you should avoid, but I do know that Bellaire is a very good place to live. Would living outside of Houston be too far? Like Sugarland, Pearland area? Those are good places to live too. I do know that the Ben Taub hospital is lots of homeless people around there and "bad people" go there to be treated, so I would assume the area near there wouldn't be good? I don't know for sure though...check it out.Best place in Houston near the medical center to live?
I favor Midtown Houston. It's convenient to all of the main expressways and the Metrorail has several stops in the area. Don't take my word for it check out the blog Midtown live, it has information about the apartments in the area and things to do on weekends.
I agree that Midtown is a good place for a young couple commuting to the Med. Center area. Lots of new apartments, cafes %26amp; restaurants, all walkable. A rarity in Houston.

Bellaire is very nice also but more "family" oriented.

Try Braeswood too, there are some beautiful, big homes mixed in with smaller ones and several nice, new apartment/town homes.

There is a high rise called The Spires that is just behind the Med. Center and has lovely apartments that are not horribly expensive.

I would stay away from the Astrodome area.
